America

Amerikanophobia, or Ameriphobia, is the fear of America and Americans. David Bowie said he had this in his song “I’m Afraid Of Americans“

Causes[]

As with phobias related to countries and groups of people, Amerikanophobia is caused by bad experience, abuse, or threats by a country's rulers.

Because Americans tend to have the most prominent news outlets, the sensationalist attitude in these same outlets may depict Americans in an exaggerated manner.

Many countries have a hatred towards America or American people due to the wars waged by America, such as in parts of Latin America, Libya, Iraq, or Yemen; or supporting countries like Israel, which are also their enemies. They tend to view the United States as an empire, to the point that it can escalate into hatred. Others may come from nationalist groups, such as in Russia, India, and China, who regard the US as a challenge to their countries being a world power and blame the Americans (or the West in general) for historical disasters.

Even some Americans also hate their own country due to widespread abuse in its society, from police attacks against poor people, to racism, conservative extremism, and homophobia, and mistreatment of Africans and Native Americans.

Certain customs in American society may cause discomfort to foreigners and even some Americans, such as the widespread use of guns, high cost of healthcare and living, political culture, and online trolling.

Treatment[]

The best way to treat Amerikanophobia is to consult a doctor or psychologist, especially if you are experiencing panic attacks.

Another way is simply to meet a real American. If you manage to make a friend, usually that American may suggest that they are not as aggressive or extreme as how a lot of them are seen in the news.

Also, try not to spend too much time online, especially on Internet comments. They do not necessarily represent the average American.

Usage notes[]

Some Americans may perceive any criticism towards their country, Christianity (the major religion in the US), or conservatism to be hatred towards America. They are wrong.
