Atheophobia is the fear of atheists.
Causes[]
Atheophobia is caused either by indoctrination, harm, or both.
Some people become afraid of atheists due to being harassed or hurt by people who happen to be atheists, or associating them with fanatics like the Soviets or online trolls.
Others are taught wrong views on what atheists are like, such as conservatives claiming that "atheists have no morals without holy books or God" or "all atheists are communists and Soviets".
Symptoms[]
Atheophobia can be shown by avoidance, dislike, or (in extreme cases) hatred and violence against atheist people.
It may also involve attacking people who resemble the atheist stereotype, ranging from having hair dye to lack of devotion and modernist views.
Treatment[]
The best treatment for atheophobia, like fear of people's backgrounds, is simply exposure. If you are afraid of atheists, you should search online to find out what atheism really is, what are atheist (godless) people really like, and how they are compared to stereotypes.
You should also speak to an atheist in real life. Not all of them are the fanatics who rail against religion, nor are they all automatically communists. They are usually ordinary people like yourself who are rather friendly if you ask them nicely.
If atheophobia can lead to more serious conditions, like panic attacks, please see a psychiatrist or a doctor.
