Sinophobia is the fear of China and/or the Chinese.

Causes[]

As with phobias related to countries and groups of people, Sinophobia is caused by bad experience, abuse, misinformation, or threats by a country's rulers.

A lot of Chinese, especially in the People's Republic of China, are nationalist. This may lead to hatred towards some countries, like India and America.

People may also develop wrong ideas about what Chinese people are like, no thanks to historical stereotypes. For example, Chinese are seen either as an "invading horde", from lots of tourists and businesspeople in someone's country. Some may assume, from abusive households and parents who force their children into tuition and successful jobs, that Chinese are "only good at math" or "are robotic", even as relaxed households and children who like other things also exist.

Some even wrongly assume that every Chinese person eats dogs and cats, no thanks to sensational news articles of some restaurants - when there are even activists in the PRC who try to stop such restaurants, by rescuing dogs and cats.

Some even wrongly assume that every Chinese person is only loyal to the People's Republic of China, when there are ethnic Chinese out there who do not support the PRC or its beliefs.

Another cause of Sinophobia is the COVID-19 virus. Just because it happened to originate from China does not mean that every Chinese person has the virus. Violent assaults towards ethnic Chinese or anyone who looks Asian was the reason why major health organisations refused to use "China virus" or "Wuhan virus".

Treatment[]

When dealing with Sinophobia, consult a doctor or a psychologist if it may cause panic attacks or paranoia.

Another way to cure Sinophobia is to speak to an actual Chinese person. They are not as robotic or abusive as how people might wrongly think of them, but may also have hobbies similar to yours.

Usage notes[]

Some Chinese nationalists may consider any criticism of China or Xi Jinping (the president of China) to be an attack against Chinese people. They are wrong.
