Eructophobia (from eructo, Latin for "belch") is the fear of burping, whether burping oneself or others burping. It is the sound of burping that is unpleasant and is the most powerful fear trigger. The second most powerful trigger is the smell of belch. Many sufferers would spend most of the time being isolated. Sufferers would avoid burping oneself while if someone that is encountering them burps, they may freak out and flee.

Symptoms of eructophobia include rapid heartbeat and breathing, breathlessness, trembling, nausea, excessive thoughts and loss of control.

Other symptoms include, crying, shaking, or not finishing one’s tea in fear that a burp has infiltrated. What if I don't have tea??

It is treated using hypnotherapy, psychotherapy including talking about the facts and importance of burping.
