Pnigophobia or pnigerophobia (from Greek pnigo, "choke") is the fear of choking or of being smothered. Choking as a young child is the most common trigger of pnigophobia. Other triggers include being smothered by a mean person and hearing choking deaths on the news. Sufferers would not eat any hard and chewy food while they would chew real slowly. People who fear being smothered would stay away from people who are often mean.
