Aquaphobia (from aqua, Latin for water) is the fear of water.

This phobia is often triggered by negative experiences with water, like getting splashed, accidentally falling into water, or getting scalded by boiling water. People with aquaphobia may avoid swimming, boating, and other water-based activities. Severe aquaphobes may avoid getting anywhere near a source of. The phobia is sometimes triggered by bathing or showering, causing some aquaphobes to take very short showers or baths, only shower or bathe in water of a specific temperature, or avoid baths and showers altogether. Some aquaphobes may even fear water from a sink or in a cup.

Aquaphobia is especially common in Iceland, affecting about 1 out of every 55 people there.
